It helps you filter your Twitter friends to find the ones that are following you, the ones you are following as well as the ones that are not following you and the ones you are not following.

Twitter text commands are words you can type in order to get Twitter to perform a specific action like turning notifications off or on for specific users or for general messages to your phone. Some of the Twitter commands were pretty useful in the early days of Twitter but now that there are many Twitter clients which can perform similar actions, they don’t seem to be used by many people anymore. Apart from ‘@username’ or ‘d’ of course.

The brevity of Twitter updates makes it an ideal tool to be used to jot down short notes, observations or reminders to yourself. While you can manually record what you eat or spend everyday, your tweets might be difficult to archive in a way which can be viewed with a single glance. That’s where websites like tweetwhatyoueat and tweetwhatyouspend come in. Both of them allow you record what you eat or spend on a daily basis and make it referenceable via an online interface.

Twitter is currently looking to crawl links included in tweets and index the content of these pages, which means that Twitter search will no longer just be a snapshot of a stream of tweets occuring in real-time.. but an archive of webpages that have been historically tweeted or mentioned by Twitter users.
This was mentioned by Santosh Jayaram, currently Twitter’s VP of Operations and formerly a the VP of search quality on Google. What’s interesting is that Twitter Search will develop a ‘reputation’ ranking system’:

Tweecious is a Firefox addon that syncs with delicious: all the links you post on Twitter will be automatically bookmarked on your delicious account. Delicious is the most popular social bookmarking website online and if you haven’t tried it before, you should probably sign up for an account. It’s great!

BackTweets is a Twitter search engine that allows you to do one thing: find out who links to a specific webpage or website on Twitter. All you have to do is to enter the specific URL you want to check and backtweet will show who is not just talking about it but linking to it.
Backtweets is pretty cool because it does a good job of determining who links, even when there are so many different URL shorteners out there. Note that you can also grab the RSS for your search result so you can monitor the incoming links in your feed reader.

I just discovered Twitfave, a site that allows you to find how what tweets of yours are favourited by other users. It also offers a collection of ‘hot’ tweets or ‘classic’ tweets, a list of tweets that are have been favorited by the general Twitter community. I like the feature a lot and the only downside is that the interface is a little clumsy.. I would love to have a simple numerical view of the number of favorites next to each tweet. But that’s only personal preference I guess.

I haven’t seen much Twitter visualization tools being developed so it was nice to find VisibleTweets, a app that allows you to enter a keyword and then see tweets being surfed up in a stream. There are only three different animations and there doesn’t seem to be a way to pause the animation which isn’t a good thing because sometimes you do see some interesting tweets you want to reply. But still, its a fun tool especially if you put it on full-screen.

There are several ways to find out who is tweeting near your location.. apart from searching on Twitter ranking lists, you can do a real-time scan of tweets using several tools. Here are some ways you can find Twitter users near you!
1. Twitter Advanced Search

Twitter’s very own Advanced Search gives you the option of zeroing in on tweets from users withint a specific location.See the images below for Twitter’s built-in advanced search. I did a search for ‘Swine Flu’ and ‘New York’. You can click on this link to see the results yourself.

Ever wanted to find out what someone’s first words were on Twitter? Now you can with MyTweet16, a tool which shows you the first 16 tweets ever made by any user. I tried it and found that it couldn’t find the first tweets for some users, usually the ones that registered in 2007 or even 2008.. but give it a try for your Twitter friends or some people you know. It’s fun!
